Cambridge Careers

The Next Step Internship Program

Launched in 2012, our annual Next Step® summer internship program continues to attract highly talented students as Cambridge receives hundreds of qualified applications each year. Our interns represent colleges and universities from across the country, and are studying a variety of majors including business, computer science, marketing, accounting, and many more.

The Next Step® program provides students an opportunity to join various departments across the firm in full-time, paid internship roles. During the 11-week program, interns learn about industry basics, participate in professional development courses, shadow Cambridge associates in other departments, and present final projects to colleagues. Supplementing their college studies with practical experience in the financial services industry, this year’s interns will work closely with a professional mentor, supervisor, and executive champion in their assigned departments.

In previous years, several interns have returned for multiple summers, while others have gone on to work in various financial services positions across the country. Many students who participate in the program return to Cambridge as full-time associates.

Cambridge received hundreds of applications for its 2023 program and selected 34 students who worked in our Fairfield, Iowa office, or the Phoenix, Arizona, office which opened in 2020 as part of the firm’s strategic growth objectives.

Events

Cambridge hosts various events throughout the summer to encourage networking and volunteer opportunities.

Cambridge hosts a welcome banquet at the beginning of each summer program which is the kickstart to summer and allows the interns to build friendships. The event begins with introductions by executives, with special speakers from our executive leadership team offering useful insight and tips for making the best of The Next Step® program. We host an End of Summer Banquet to conclude the summer program. The event allows interns to hear from additional speakers, share key insights they learned throughout summer and to further network as they prepare for their long-term careers.

Interns have the opportunity to participate in Cambridge sponsored courses throughout the summer. Several courses are required, but interns have the flexibility to enroll in additional courses to better equip themselves with the knowledge necessary to find success in a corporate setting. Courses consist of resume workshops, problem solving, proper work etiquette, along with an analysis and in-depth look at interviewing tips and techniques from the Human Resources Team.

Throughout the summer, Cambridge hosts a variety of events where interns have the opportunity to socialize in a relaxed setting with fellow interns as well as senior executives. Many interns have expressed that the intern social events are the best way to network and socialize with Cambridge associates who are sometimes harder to reach during work hours.

Throughout The Next Step® program, interns are invited to informational sessions that educate them on professional development and current issues. The events are catered and led by a variety of Cambridge teams and generally begin with presentations lasting from 10-15 minutes followed by a group discussion.

One of the requirements of The Next Step® program is for the intern group to plan and organize a local volunteer event. The interns are granted a full day of paid time off in order to fulfill the project. This opportunity not only gives interns the ability to serve the local community, but it’s a great way to bond through volunteering.
